Nature dominates our world & commands our respect. Appreciate your garden, sunrises & sunsets & translate them into your art accepting with grace what only nature can provide. Self-taught in various creative mediums; my enthusiasm for design began as a child with nature as my focal point. My passion for yarn, fabric & fiber evolves daily. My creations embellish the surfaces of my daily life giving detail to austerity. Does it catch the eye? Does the piece draw attention deeper into the creativeness of the piece? The natural world is my preferred palette and in human hands-magic often happens. The artistic process is the desire to create & play with concepts. "A River Runs Through It"

"A River Runs Through It"

A cathartic work, this piece represents my younger years in Montana watching my older brother fly fishing in the gorgeous Gallatin River. The river, ripples,& bedrock are all represented in this piece & I can see my brother's fly fishing rod & the line rhythmically dancing & the heat mirages on the river dancing with and through each other. I feel patterns of my own life joining with them. The stories of life are like this river & I touch the water & the ripples grown larger & drift silently away from my fingertips & I know that eventually all things merge into one as Big Sky Montana, Ponderosa Pines, the bedrock (flap) & the river encircle me & eventually all merge as A River Runs Through It. Visiting China & Hong Kong I purchased batik cloth & the blues in the fabric line the interior base carrying on the river theme. Two silver Hushco buttons adorn the front flap. This gorgeous yarn stripes with shades of blue representing the river & the strap & flap edges ripple like the river & therefore, in this work..".A River Runs Through It "( a book by Norman Maclean)

This medium tote begins with a black wool base and then novelty yarns are carried upwards depicting Jellicle Cat whiskers, fur & then the large black & white beads which surround the lower top of the bag depict Jellicle Cat's eyes. One interior pocket continues the black & white Jellicle theme as does the double I Cord handle which pulls through for use as a shoulder strap. A precious, vintage wool sweater washed & felted into a beautiful fabric that I cut to create this lovely metamorphis from a wool sweater to a lovely Bohemian (hand embellished) handbag. 'Starry Night Tote'

'Starry Night Tote'

Knitted, felted & needlefelted this medium tote replicates Van Gogh's famous painting 'Starry Night' (1889). A night sky filled with swirling clouds, stars ablaze in their own luminescence & a bright crescent moon each are exaggerated features in a scene we all can relate to as the sky keeps the viewer's eye moving about & following the stars. A small town lies below the rolling hills with a peaceful essence with a tall church steeple center point. A unique dichronic glass button coordinates for the top edge closure. Reflected in the eleven stars is Van Gogh's religious endeavor from Genesis 37:9..'behold, the sun, moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me...' I stood near this painting twice in my life & it touches me deeply. This was a pleasure to attempt to recreate in yarn. Enjoy!

Once in a Blue Moon one designs a work of art that defines one's passion in and for life. Knitted & felted with gorgeous colors emulating water, earth & sky coming together & existing harmoniously as the astrological belief that the world is in the Age of Aquarius-an age of love, light & humanity. This work is filled with symbolism with the bobbles around the bottom edge symbolizing the planets; up into the turquoise with the silver beads as stars in the sky & still upward to the rows with fashion buttons and a large pendant which emulates earth & then back into the bobble like planets around the top edge. The top edge is beautifully felted with two ICORD loops on each side of this piece and they hold two ICORD handle twists. The interior carries on the theme of Aquarius with two lovely pockets and a fashion fabric in purples covering a twice reinforced base for beauty, strength & durability. The entire work is surrounded with the beads, bobbles , buttons & pendants on the front & back. Everything becomes unified. All of our differences, all of our dualities mix together like the fragrances of a flower garden, with all the varieties of flowers adding their bouquet to the overall mix until they are inseparable . Each individual flower remains distinct & individual, each one's fragrance is unique & discernible yet joined together in unity with the others in a wonderful mixture that is the fragrance of life's garden with water as life's source. Blue Bayou The Big Easy

Blue Bayou The Big Easy

The Big Easy, Crescent City, New Orleans-call it what you may and with this piece I attempted to capture the essence of the Louisiana bayou and its timeless beauty. With the bayous & the Cajun "joie de vivre" this work attempts to reveal some of the mysteries of the swamps, trees & Cajun music with this washboard look to the flap on this work. In my attempt to capture the "bon temps" (good times) I have experienced in New Orleans I added a beautiful set of silver beads knitted and felted around the base of this work and also added silver beads to the lower edge of the flap. The fringed flap expresses my love for the southern trees with Spanish moss hanging down from the branches. The wonderful sense of history & life of New Orleans has influenced the arts from writings of George W. Cable,Lafcadio Hearn, Grace Elizabeth King & an endless variety of artists with infinite genres. The interior of this piece continues the Bayou theme with the lovely Creole fabric I purchased in New Orleans.

Bourbon Street (Mardi Gras Bag)

Bourbon Street (Mardi Gras Bag)

Bourbon Street Bag knitted/felted into this fun Mardi Gras (New Orleans) celebration & I find it very apropos to have completed this bag for Shrove Tuesday (Fat Tuesday) and the celebrations/merrymaking taking place in New Orleans & in other places around the world. It is fun to take one of these out of my purse to write a check when necessary and it is even easier to find my checkbook. Made of recycled fabric & lace, these are lovely and very functional. I have people ask me where I purchased them and they are so easy and fun to sew. Lined with a soft white cotton fabric & light weight batting in between the layers. Enjoy!

CHRISTMAS CRECHE TEXTILE SCULPTURE

CHRISTMAS CRECHE TEXTILE SCULPTURE

These seasonal pieces are molded & crafted from muslin, wire shapes and a special paste and then allowed to dry. Please take note of how carefully the muslin fabric must be handled to create the look of folded fabric and the way in which the robes look as though they have drape to them. After the drying process they are very firm and can be spray painted or handpainted with gold or silver. Cording is used for hair on the angels and also for ties on the shepherds' robes and Joseph's robe and the head pieces. The tallest angel is 18 inches high ;small angels 8 inches high, Mary(holding baby Jesus)/Joseph & shepherds 12 inches high; wisemen 15 inches high (each). Sturdy and gorgeous seasonal pieces. I have made them each five feet high using wire plant holders (firm wire tomato stands) for an altar display. These are beautiful year after year. (One can finish these with jewels for the wisemen and Joseph and the shepherds have wooden staffs that fit into each of their hands.

Clinging Vines (wine sac & caddy)

Gorgeous organic wool/soy yarn felted into this lovely beverage sac & wine caddy knitted/felted with organic yarns. The knitted/felted vines & berries were added after the felting process to embellish both the beverage sac & caddy. ICord ties are embellished at the ends with seed beads in various colors to compliment the felted yarn. Song lyrics came to mind when I designed this host/hostess set. Covent Garden (felted bag)

Covent Garden (felted bag)

Rich wool yarns in shades of deep greens & several novelty yarns used in creating this showstopper bag/tote. Covent Garden is one of my favorite places in London because of its street performers, theatres & the Royal Opera House. Daisy A Day

Daisy A Day

Knitted/felted vintage bubble bag pattern is reminiscent of a flower garden. My mother-in-law loved daisies & had a garden full of them so with the three lovely daisy fashion buttons the colors in this bag look very much like her flower garden. Daisies are such friendly flowers. The knitted/felted scalloped flap has three button holes and two I Cord handles run through the top edge and are tied like small rosettes in the front and back top edges of this fun/flowery bag. Days of Wine and Roses

Days of Wine and Roses

DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES captures the essence of a romantic picnic or a couple in love seeking those carefree, intimate moments together of the DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES (and YOU). Lest one forget that the DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES never need to end and this tote was designed and created with that in mind. The tiny and beautiful purple silk roses which delicately surround the top edge of this piece continue to remind a special someone that there were those magic moments and that the flowers may fade and die but that magical time of being in love will be remembered. The purples, pinks and fabulous contrasting colors only compliment the total essence of this piece. Desert Wildflowers Bag

Desert Wildflowers Bag

Living in San Diego, we witnessed the beauty of the Anza-Borrego Desert in bloom with its colorful carpet of spring flowers. Stunningly magnificent; desert wildflowers & gorgeous insects drifiting from flower to flower is nature's palette. In knitting/felting/embroidering this bag I attempted to capture the essence of the desert in bloom. My felted bags are not mass produced & due to the nature of the fibres & material used, each is a unique creation/design. An adjustable ICORD handle may be used double or pulled through to tie at the side (adjustable tie) for a lovely over-the shoulder look. The interior is exquisitely detailed with magnetic snap, reinforced , (hand tie-dyed) fabric covered base , two interior pockets & top edged interior trim. A fashionable, fun bag. A deep purple base of a desert evening gives way to the desert dawn's natural wildflower splendor and a lovely dragonfly fashion pendant embellishes the novelty yarn embroidered flap. Enjoy!

Divinely Victorian

Divinely Victorian

Divinely Victorian is the epitome of frivolity. In the Victorian Era and also in the Rococo era of painting women's fashions were seen as fussy and overdone. Even the glimpse of an ankle was considered scandalous. Some people now look back on the Victorian Era with wistful nostalgia. This work only began with the knitting & felting. The artist in me truly begins the theme with the knitted & felted bag as my canvas. Luscious silk ribbons adorn each corner of this piece with beads and pearls adorning the wool roving needelfelted onto my "canvas". Three pink, pearlized buttons adorn the flap where Little Flowers yarn is crocheted around the flap edge and also around the top interior edge under the flap. The interior pocket is also embellished with these tiny "flowers" in colors to compliment this work. The outer area of the front of this piece frames a lovely, embellished pocket with a loop which catches a lovely fashion button & a knitted/felted rose embellishes the bottom of the small e

Earth, Wind & Fire

Earth, Wind & Fire

This fabulous organic wool/soy yarn is gorgeous & felts beautifully. While knitting this bag I thought the colors reminded me of the southwest & the decorative flap is very southwest & reminds me of earth, wind & fire. The funky felted fringe looks like fire and the flap bobbles look like earth & rocks. An I Cord handle pulls through for one handle or two. I placed a golden sun pendant under the flap for even more of a southwestern theme. Enjoy this lovely fun & funky bag aptly named after the 70's group Earth, Wind & Fire whose music combined soul, gospel, jazz & an element of African sounds for cosmic, mystical sprituality which adds to the theme of this bag.

ETUI (French) (Needlecase)

ETUI (French) (Needlecase)

An etui was a small needlecase used by the sailors in the 1800's to mend the ship's sails. These etuis were small & fit into the sailor's pocket. I designed a large pattern and crafted this ETUI for an office setting with many places to put things. The theme of this is astrological and each side holds an office supply and the center box holds pens/pencils/magnifying glass etc. The inside of the lid is decorated with astrological minature pieces such as stars and moons to compliment the exterior fabric and to show off the beautiful blue fabric lining. These are one of a kind and definitely a conversation piece. A true Showstopper.

ETUIS (French) (needlecases)

ETUIS (French) (needlecases)

I designed a pattern for these ETUIS (French) (needlecases) which is much larger than the sailors in the 1800's used to carry their items for mending the ship's sails. The lids come off and the gorgeous interiors present themselves with places for office supplies, toiletries, baby's room items etc. Let your imagination go and flow with the fabric and interior design. I placed beads, pin cushions and charms into the lid interiors. The black stretch cord on each interior side is used to hold supplies. I created one for an office and it contained pens, pencils, stapler etc. The small box in the very center can be turned over and a small vignette can be made from the many minature scrapbooking pieces on the market. I created one with a minature desk, computer, chair & with added office items in minature. These make wonderful gifts. The two are not for sale but I am designing more of these lovely, practical ETUIS which are indeed conversation pieces.

Ju-Xian Chrysanthemum City

Ju-Xian Chrysanthemum City

Ju-Xian, is an ancient Chinese city whose name means "chrysanthemum city". This flower was introduced to Japan around the 8th century A.D. & the Emperor adopted the chrysanthemum as his official seal. There is a 'Festival of Happiness" in Japan which celebrates this lovely flower. It was brought to Europe in the 17th century. Linnaeus (botanist), named it for the Greek prefix 'Chrys' which means 'golden' (the color of the original flower) & 'anthemon' meaning 'flower'. The flower is called Oogiku in Japanese meaning big Chrysanthemum. This is a lovely, large bag with a gorgeous interior fabric base continuing the Chrysanthemum theme. Lavender Blue Dilly Dilly (scarf)

Lavender Blue Dilly Dilly (scarf)

Knitted with gorgeous wool yarn (Foliage) whose colors could compete with nature being warm & cool, very organic & uber-texture. This pattern is a favorite of mine and it is like magic as I knit and the blocks take shape like 'magic' and the ruffle only adds to the beauty in the colors of this gorgeous yarn. A fun pattern that truly knits up in a magical way creating ruffles & ridges. The concept is so interesting as I knit blocks of stockinette & reverse stockinette to create 'magic ' in checkerboard/basketweave. Soft as cashmere and cozy and warm for Minnesota winters or just to wear with a sweater or blouse. Enjoy ruffles & ridges for Lavender Blue Dilly Dilly!

Loring Park & City Lights at Twilight

Loring Park & City Lights at Twilight

My love for Minneapolis as the CITY OF LAKES inspired my LORING PARK, CITY LIGHTS AT TWILIGHT felted tote. AT the bottom of the tote I attempted to create the earth by knitting green wool along with a novetly ribbon to give it the look of earth/'dirt' and then proceeded to knit into the grasses and greenery around the park and the lake with its many flowers. The CITY LIGHTS at TWILIGHT look inviting in the evening twilight at the right side of the tote and the evening sky with its twinkling stars completes the theme. The interior is finished with felted pockets complimenting the theme and the base is twice reinforced with webbing and a lovely fabric covered needlepoint foamcore for durability and beauty. I CORD handles run through the top edge and twist to come over the top edge to catch two blue star fashion buttons centered with two silver star buttons. This piece is a "WORK OF HEART".

Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu

This bag is representative of the Incan City of Machu Picchu. In preparing an artistic piece I must prepare my soul and sharpen my senses. To visit Machu Picchu one must do the same and forget the small transcendental problems of our lives and modern man. Terraced stonework is celebrated in this bag with the imitation stone beads surrounding the bottom of the bag with gradient terraced artwork knitted and felted into visually stunning colors. Imitation stone beads celebrate the top closures to this bag and represent the 'intihuatana' (hitching post of the sun).

Mardi Gras Ruffled Scarf

Mardi Gras Ruffled Scarf

I chose a lovely and very colorful yarn to create these exquisitely fun ruffles and ridges. I began with 200 stitches & continued to increase until I had 1400 stitches that I was knitting and then casting off. It is quite the process but well worth it. This is a fun scarf & goes around my black coat many times for both warmth and lots of color. It truly looks like Mardi Gras time with a carnival flair. Very soft and fun to wear. Enjoy my Mardi Gras Scarf. Thanks for stopping by.

Misselthwaite Manor The Secret Garden

Misselthwaite Manor The Secret Garden

Misselthwaite Manor is a gorgeous knitted/felted, needle felted, embellished piece of fiber art. Two stunningly beautiful hand beaded handles compliment the colors in this piece. I knitted & felted this piece, adding lovely roving to create flowers in a 'secret' garden by needle felting in various shades which compliment this piece. Stunningly beautiful hand embroidery surrounds the base of this piece giving it the look of a flower garden. The embroidery encircles the entire base of this piece. A felted interior pocket is embellsihed and felted with a lovely yarn added to continue the garden theme. Gorgeous trim is hand stitched to the interior top edge & compliments the colors in the felted piece. The twice reinforced interior base is covered with a hand tie dyed fabric which gives the interior of this piece the continued look of a garden.Wispy grasses & stems of twisted roving make the front of this bag a floral fantasy. Misselthwaite Manor is a place in the movie/stage play called "The Secret Garden" (novel by Frances Burnett 1909). The three children find a way into the secret garden & work astonishing magic in themselves & those around them lifting the spell from the mysterious Misselthwaite Manor.

Moon, Meadow and Marsh-A Brief Encounter

Moon, Meadow and Marsh-A Brief Encounter

Moon, Meadow and Marsh is a surreal work for a dreamer's delight. A harvest moon pendant is aglow in autumnal splendor and shines down onto the meadow and the marsh. It is the beauty of the harvest moon in an autumn season coming alive in fibers casting moonglow across the land. Two hand beaded handles compliment the autumnal theme with one main bead in the middle of each handle in a brilliant orange to match the swirls of color in the harvest moon pendant. The harvest moon comes out of hiding and there is a hush in the evening sky and it gem-lights the fiber needle felted meadow & marsh. This is a larger tote with two gorgeous interior pockets, a twice reinforced base & lovely top edge interior hand stitched autumnal trim. The interior base is covered in a gorgeous autumn fashion fabric to compliment & carry on the autumnal theme as we welcome autumn through this piece. Thanks for stopping by.

Organic Pottery (three nested sets with trivets)

Utilizing natural resources (wool & soy) makes knitting/felting these three organic sets of bowls with trivets & coasters especially gratifying and offers an appreciation for Nature and different cultures and traditions. The natural fibers create sensational and bold color combinations and it is exciting to explore different designs/shapes. It is like kneading dough and as I work with the felted pieces in my hands; I see the wool changing. The possibilities in form and color are endless. Pony Express Messenger Bag

Pony Express Messenger Bag

Pony Express Messenger Bag, was specifically knitted/felted with gorgeous subtle neutral tones using exquisitely beautiful wool yarns to pay homage to a great time in our country when the pony express riders began to carry mail on horseback in April of 1860. That time in history was brief but picturesque and the pony express lives in legend as well as history. With this messenger bag I pay homage to that time and to the manager of the pony express-Alexander Majors of Kentucky. You will not need a horse to carry this beautiful bag and it is a modern version of an old messenger tradition. This computer/notebook bag contains two interior pockets, knitted/felted in the same gorgeous yarns and the pockets handstitched to each interior side of the bag where the three inch wide knitted/felted strap is handstitched to the bag after the felting process. Knitted in a lovely striping pattern the interior is as lovely as the exterior. The interior base is reinforced with canvas webbing and also with lovely fabric covered needlepoint foamcore for added strength, durability (also reminiscent of pony express riders). The flap attaches to the bag with two gold magnetic clasps and the exterior of the flap is embellished with two russet colored wooden fashion buttons to add beauty and a sign of the old west with its gorgeous, open range countryside. The two interior pockets can hold a computer/notebook cord and the battery charger. Stylish, unique and very much a part of our nation's history one can imagine crossing this beautiful country on horseback carrying invaluable information. Pony Express Messenger Bag-a timeless piece.

Pretty In Pink (hat & scarf set)

Pretty In Pink (hat & scarf set)

Knitted with lovely baby alpaca yarn, this hat is one of my favorite designs/creations. A rolled edge flows into a moss stitch to complete the basic hat. I knitted four leaves & attached them to the top of the hat for perfect parfait perfection & then embellished them with a deep pink floral button which mimics the points on the leaves. I left the points of the leaves to curl a wee bit at the tips. I knitted a long piece in brown baby alpaca in a moss stitch for added warmth on a cold winter's day. It is easily pulled over the basic hat & three floral buttons embellish the front. A crocheted tie pulls through the top edge to ruffle the edges of this brown wrap to create a lovely look for the pink leaves. This ties at the side of the hat & gives it a Victorian look. I then knitted a gorgeous neck warmer with moss stitch and knits & purls for a basketweave look. This is such a lovely set designed for a special lady. Enjoy! Thanks for stopping by.

Using a lucite handle I cut two pieces of wool felt & made loops to hold the handle. Scandinavian Heritage

Scandinavian Heritage

Statement
Proud of my Scandinavian heritage I completed this set of Norwegian & Swedish counted cross stitch pieces with TLC. Counted cross stitch transfers a design from a printed graph onto evenweave fabric. The stitcher uses embroidery floss to place X's on the fabric corresponding to symbols on the chart. Each symbol on the chart represents one X on the fabric. The different styles of symbols on the chart represent different colors of floss.Cross stitch is easy to learn and requires only a few supplies. These make lovely gifts & keepsakes. Represented here are two Dala horses (red & blue) which are traditional Swedish keepsakes; a Norwegian Viking Ship; Viking (norseman), & Swedish flag. Thanks for stopping by.

A portion of the felted sweater became a Solresol accessory bag for the larger bag. The button on this accessory matches the buttons on the front & back of the larger Solresol bag. The beautiful Solresol language consists of seven syllables-the notes of the scale (do-re-mi-fa-so-la-si (we changed it to 'ti'). Sudre also devised a means for translating ROYGBIV, the colors of the rainbow, with Solresol syllables so that every tapestry, painting, splash of color takes on literal meaning. I knitted a lovely sweater in gorgeous, rainbow colors then felted it & cut cut it into smaller pieces to create this lovely handstitched, embroidered ,embellished over-the-shoulder bag in Solresol which is a universal language created by Jean Francois Sudre. Each word in this language is composed of some of the seven notes of the musical scale & each of the seven notes is also represented by one of the seven colors of the rainbow. You can communicate in Solresol via a sequence of colors. Several messages are hidden in the colors of this Solresol bag. (frm mls - to be loved/one message) Enjoy!

Spring in Giverny (Monet Landscape Bag)

Spring in Giverny (Monet Landscape Bag)

Knitted/felted with gorgeous greens & pink organic wool/soy yarns & lovely novelty yarns to give the 'impression' of Monet's 1890 landscape painting 'Spring in Giverny' which is a favorite of mine. The pastels in this landscape bag imitate the lovely pinks & greens of Monet's painting. Monet loved Giverny & his works have a clearness of vision & a fidelity to nature. Welcome to a Monet garden landscape bag with its many tiny pastel novelty pom poms felted into the midst of the bag looking like tiny flowers in a garden. A hand tie-dyed fabric embellishes the bottom interior & lovely pink & green trim surrounds the top interior edge. A lovely shell button embellishes the top edge & two interior pockets & magnetic clasp complete the bag. Two photos show knitted/felted wool/soy (organic) accessory bag. Enjoy!

St. Tropez (organic pottery )

St. Tropez (organic pottery )

Luscious citrus colors emerged during the felting process with gorgeous wool/soy yarns & I thought of beautiful St. Tropez on the Mediterranean Sea. These two lovely citrus bowls, trivet & coaster set add a touch of the Mediterranean to any room. Filled with citrus scented potpourri they take me back to St. Tropez with its charming little streets & alleys. Early AM at the Place aux Herbes one can find fruits, vegetables & flowers & watch the local fishermen selling their fresh catch. Enjoy a typical Provengal Market in the Place des Lices & festive processions called "Bravades". Enjoy St. Tropez!

Staghorn Coral Ocean Reef (organic pottery)

Staghorn Coral Ocean Reef (organic pottery)

I knitted & felted this beautiful varigated wool and soy organic yarn and the concept of working with something so directly from nature inspired the artist in me to name this pottery after an ocean reef. The Great Barrier Reef in the Coral Sea forms a natural breakwater for the coast of Australia and contains coral gardens and unusual marine life. It is the largest reef in the world. Of the many hundreds of varieties of coral growing on the reef, the Staghorn (antler type) is one of the most common. The Great Barrier Reef is a true wonderland of color and beauty. This organic yarn knitted & felted into a beautiful oceanic reef pattern and I can hear the ocean and see the many beautiful sea creatures and plant life come out in this wool and soy as it felted and the Staghorn coral concept jumped out at me and longed to be part of these beautiful color combinations. Thank you for sharing in nature with me through these organic creations. (non skid fabric backing)

Stained Glass Jackets & Puzzle Purses

Stained Glass Jackets & Puzzle Purses

These lovely jackets are fun to make because they are designed to look like stained glass and the puzzle purses I make match some of the 'stained glass' fabric pieces. The puzzle purse has many hidden pockets with myriads of uses and has a clear plastic interior bottom piece which can be removed so the purse is a hobo bag. The purse strap pulls through for two shoulder straps or one and the interior has two lovely fabric pockets. Stained glass has always intrigued me and I created this pattern for a stained glass look to a jacket. I also designed the puzzle purse pattern. One size fits most and it indeed looks like 'stained glass' as the pieces come together.

Strawberry Shortcake Scarf

Strawberry Shortcake Scarf

Another fun Ruffles & Ridges Scarf knitted with gorgeous Tosca variagated (self-striping) yarn. This pattern is so variable adding ruffles or adding garter stitch around the edges. One can cast on any even number of stitches and create a variety of looks but I like the crocheted ruffled edge to this pattern and it is a fun pattern. You can make this scarf as long as you like & knitting it in a heavier weight yarn is really fun. Your needle size can be varied-just have fun with it! Enjoy!

Sunflowers Tote (Van Gogh still life)

Sunflowers Tote (Van Gogh still life)

Van Gogh's Sunflower paintings (1888) have become nearly synonymous with his name & techniques. Colors in the many Sunflower paintings are vibrant & express emotions associated with the life of sunflowers. Bright yellows, oranges & browns typify the life and the wilting of sunflowers-all stages woven through these polar opposites are presented & I attempted to recreate these emotions in this bag with its vibrant colors to its browns & wilting dichotomy. I designed the beaded, dichronic glass button exploring the interplay of color to attempt to match the Sunflower's life. Two handles add to the theme with beaded handles and an over the shoulder ICORD handle. I attempted to reach a deeper understanding of how all living things are tied together. Enjoy 'Sunflowers'!

These two yarns truly give this blanket a gorgeous look and I crocheted the edge with these two yarns held together. Truly lovely & a family keepsake. Enjoy this lovely Sweet Dreams Crib Blanket as much as I enjoyed creating it.

The Grand Canyon (organic pottery set)

The Grand Canyon (organic pottery set)

Wool/soy yarn in these gorgeous hues blended into the Grand Canyon once it was felted creating these beautiful pieces: two bowls, trivet & coasters. The colors are amazingly beautiful. The Grand Canyon organic pottery is deep, multilayered & interwoven into something so breathtakingly beautiful & reminds me of our Grand Canyon. The Grand Canyon is untarnished wilderness encompassing beauty, antiquity, solitude, inspiration & revitalization of the human spirit. It is a living, infinite fractal of profound depth & I discovered it in this felted organic pottery. Take a hiking trail with me & enjoy The Grand Canyon & I guarantee you will leave with memories for a lifetime. Thanks for stopping by to view my Grand Canyon organic pottery.

The Great Gatsby (felted bag)

The Great Gatsby (felted bag)

Gorgeous fuschia wool held together with a teal novelty yarn knitted & fulled (felted) into this fabulous era of flappers & the Charleston (1920's) calling it' The Great Gatsby' (bag). Two gorgeous ruffles, a felted teal flower embellished with feathery yarn & a ribbon trim in silver with blues & pinks throughout the ribbon is crocheted under the ruffles to give the top a very ruffled & adorned edge & is reminiscent of the headbands worn by flappers in the 1920's era. The Rose

The Rose

"The Rose' felted art is inspired by the song and the 1979 movie;"The Rose". In this piece there is a river & in the song-"some say love it is a river" & the lyrics also say "love is a hunger" but also like the song lyrics say: " I say love it is a flower and you its only seed...& the soul afraid of dying that never learns to live...then just remember in the winter, far beneath the bitter snows, lies the seed that with the sun's love, in the spring becomes "The Rose". This piece attempts to prepare the viewer for 'joie de vivre' or the literal French translation: joy of living'. For, in life, we live, we laugh & we love & when there is a winter in our lives it will pass and the light will shine and bring us: "The Rose

Under The Tuscan Sun

Under The Tuscan Sun

UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN is a KNITTED/FELTED THEME TOTE. This lovely tote is knitted and felted (fulled) with gorgeous wool yarns combined with novelty yarns to create this one of a kind theme bag/tote. Felting (fulling) is an age old process in which the piece is knitted then felted in hot water to create these beautiful totes and bags. This age old process has come full circle and with all the new yarns on the market it makes this process challenging and a creative endeavor.

Valenki Felted Slippers

Valenki Felted Slippers

This beautiful pair of valenki slippers are a modified version of the traditional Valenki slipper. A very challenging process with very satisfying results. Raw wool is felted (by hand) directly onto a foot-shaped mold but I used a wooden shoe tree wrapped in plastic to protect the wood. With my hands and lots of agitation with the raw wool I felted a slipper around the wooden shoe tree using soap, water & a washboard for the agitation process. Once the raw wool is felted around the mold I pulled and stretched the sole to bring it into more of a moccasin type slipper. Valenki slippers have been found and dated back to the 4th century B.C. in Russia. I call them "Home Slippers". As you wear them they form to your feet and the double sole I worked into the bottoms is supposed to massage the foot as you wear the slippers. I used suede around the entire top edges of each slipper and then added a fashion button in complimentary colors. This process is very rewarding.

Vase with Flowers (still life felted bag)

Vase with Flowers (still life felted bag)

Inspired by the impressionist painters a 40" over-the shoulder strap & a 6x8 " felted bag became my 'canvas' for a Van Gogh sunflower still life. Van Gogh began painting a series of sunflower oils in 1888. Sunflowers were his flower of choice. He wanted to decorate his studio with sunflowers. A series of Van Gogh paintings in 1888 is identified only as 'Sunflowers'. This knitted/felted/embroidered/... bag is lovely & fun. A wet felted ball is attached to the zippered closure & the fashion fabric lining coordinates with the colors in the stilllife. Enjoy my attempt at a Van Gogh still life-'Sunflowers'. Thanks for stopping by.

Enjoy Vines & Berries wine sack & wine caddy! It's the berries!

Wisteria 'Lilac Rose'

Wisteria 'Lilac Rose'

Statement
Wisteria 'Lilac Rose' is reminiscent of my wisteria garden in La Jolla, California. Knitted/felted holding two skeins of wool and one novelty blend of greens, pinks, purples & lavender which felted into wispy wisteria-like flowers cascading & hanging on like true Wisteria flowers. Purple beaded interior trim adds to its beauty along with pink beads handstitched around the exterior edge. One interior pocket carries on the Wisteria theme. Bottom interior is twice reinforced & boasts a gorgeous fabric covered needlepoint foamcore base for added strength, beauty & durability. Yanomamo Dance of the Women

Yanomamo Dance of the Women

The Yanomamo are deep jungle Indians living in the Amazon basin in both Venezuela & Brazil & are believed to be the most primitive, culturally intact people in existence in the world. They are literally a stone age tribe with cultural characteristics dating back more than 8000 years. The women weave & decorate the baskets making both flat & 'burden' baskets. These baskets are dyed with a red berry called onoto that they also use to decorate their bodies in colorful, bold designs. They are also hunters & gatherers who tend small garden plots. They are one of the most successful groups in the Amazon rain forest to gain a superior balance & harmony with their environment. They are a beautiful people. My large fiber bowl represents the' Yanomamo Dance of the Women'. Wooden beads from Brazil decorate the top edge and also surround the lower part of this work in three different steps. I hand dyed this yarn to attempt to recreate the red from the onoto berries. Enjoy!

Zuni Native American Wedding Bowl (organic)

Zuni Native American Wedding Bowl (organic)

Zuni Native Americans are a tribe of New Mexico. This design I created is from a photo of their clay pottery but I created it from natural fibers: organic soy, wool and corn yarns. The natural color wooden beads are added as I knit and then are felted into the bowl. This wedding bowl is called 'Harvest of Happiness" and has many uses besides being decorative. This medium organic knitted/felted bowl holds several bags of river rock & mixed potpourri. In a traditional Native American wedding ceremony the bridal couple is given a wedding vase made by the husband's parents. Indian holy water is placed in the vase and is turned around at the ceremony and given to the bride who drinks from one side and then turns it and the husband drinks from the opposite side. The couple treasures the vase throughout their married life and eventually gives the vase to another couple living a happily married life. The Wedding Vase is treasured & protected & is never broken or destroyed.

Trendy or traditional ; pretty and petite are perfect adjectives for these gorgeous knitted , felted & needle felted bags. Until I have a bag in the works and complete it; I have never "FELT" this kind of passion for an art form which is not unique to this era but has been handed down though generations and has become more popular for bags, slippers, mittens, scarves and anything that can be knitted with the gorgeous wools on the market along with so many beautiful novelty yarns. I hope that you enjoy looking at my felted pieces as much as I enjoy the whole process from hand spun yarn to kettle dyeing to the final felting process it is a challenging and fulfilling artform. The process of needle felting adds decorative wool 'pictures' to my finished felted pieces & at times gives the piece a three dimentional look. It is a very rewarding process. I have used many mediums and this is one of my favorites because it is like 'PAINTING WITH YARN". My theme bags/totes are exciting to create but I have other artistic creations that I will enjoy sharing with you. Thank You for stopping by. Patricia Maxwell
