El SolPosted by Mountain Air Batik on 5/26/2009El Sol= The sun.
I have been drawn to the arts of Pre-Colombian America since I was a youth. Whay you will find here is a group of tapstries that were inspired by the art and architecture of the Classic and Post Classic Maya of Southern Mexico and Guatemala. These tapestries are in no way stolen ideas or meant to disrespect the Maya people of Central America. WHat you will find it that I have used woven fabric(purchased fair trade) to crate borders and to give each peice more of an "authentic" feel. The dark blue/black Japse(ikat) fabric was taken from a Corte(traditonal Maya wrap skirt)that originated in Chichicastenango( circa early 80's) Guatemala, the brighter more vibrant fabric was a corte(circa mid 80's) that came from the town of San Antonio Aguas Calientes. Since this fabric was made by humans and not machines the fabric proved to be somewhat of a challenge to cut and sew. I hope that you all enjoy them. Much Thanks M.Garcia Images
