The Yanomamo are deep jungle Indians living in the Amazon basin in both Venezuela & Brazil & are believed to be the most primitive, culturally intact people in existence in the world. They are literally a stone age tribe with cultural characteristics dating back more than 8000 years. The women weave & decorate the baskets making both flat & 'burden' baskets. These baskets are dyed with a red berry called onoto that they also use to decorate their bodies in colorful, bold designs. They are also hunters & gatherers who tend small garden plots. They are one of the most successful groups in the Amazon rain forest to gain a superior balance & harmony with their environment. They are a beautiful people. My large fiber bowl represents the' Yanomamo Dance of the Women'. Wooden beads from Brazil decorate the top edge and also surround the lower part of this work in three different steps. I hand dyed this yarn to attempt to recreate the red from the onoto berries. Enjoy!

Trendy or traditional ; pretty and petite are perfect adjectives for these gorgeous knitted , felted & needle felted bags. Until I have a bag in the works and complete it; I have never "FELT" this kind of passion for an art form which is not unique to this era but has been handed down though generations and has become more popular for bags, slippers, mittens, scarves and anything that can be knitted with the gorgeous wools on the market along with so many beautiful novelty yarns. I hope that you enjoy looking at my felted pieces as much as I enjoy the whole process from hand spun yarn to kettle dyeing to the final felting process it is a challenging and fulfilling artform. The process of needle felting adds decorative wool 'pictures' to my finished felted pieces & at times gives the piece a three dimentional look. It is a very rewarding process. I have used many mediums and this is one of my favorites because it is like 'PAINTING WITH YARN". My theme bags/totes are exciting to create but I have other artistic creations that I will enjoy sharing with you. Thank You for stopping by. Patricia Maxwell
